The Black Sticks men's coach has yet to be appointed, but a new squad has already been named for 2017.

A replacement for Colin Batch, who resigned late last year to take up a position as Australia's new coach, is expected soon.

In the meantime, Hockey NZ high performance director Terry Evans says it's been pleasing to be able to retain the core of last year's Olympic squad.

The 23-strong squad is led by four players who have amassed more than 200 tests caps in Simon Child (274), Shea McAleese (243), Nick Haig (200) and Arun Panchia (205).

Twelve players who turned out for the Black Sticks at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where they lost 3-2 to Germany in the quarter-finals, have been included.

"We've named a strong squad and are confident they can continue to progress as a group and achieve great things," Evans said.

"It's great to have the commitment of the senior guys and will be exciting to watch several of the young players evolve with more time in the black shirt."

Canterbury defender David Brydon and Auckland striker Kim Kingstone are the new faces.

Black Sticks: Cory Bennett, David Brydon, Marcus Child, Simon Child, James Coughlan, George Enerson, Nick Haig, Blair Hilton, Hugo Inglis, Stephen Jenness, Richard Joyce, Kim Kingstone, Devon Manchester, Shea MacAleese, George Muir, Arun Panchia, Jared Panchia, Hayden Phillips, Nick Ross, Kane Russell, Jacob Smith, Blair Tarrant, Nic Woods.
