New Green Party MP sworn in

The Green Party's new MP, Barry Coates, has been sworn in.

Mr Coates has replaced Kevin Hague who resigned from parliament to become chief executive of Forest and Bird.

The new MP was the next on the Green Party's candidate list.

He's a former executive director of Oxfam New Zealand and has a track record of campaigning against globalisation, mining, labour rights and the environment.

Mr Coates has been given the trade, internal affairs, senior citizens, commerce and consumer affairs portfolios.
