A teenager who drowned in a New Plymouth river on Monday was attempting to cross it when he died.

Local Jaden Peterson, 17, was swept away in the Waiwhakaiho River on Monday afternoon.

Police were called just after 4.30pm and his body was located almost an hour later around 200 metres downstream from where he was last seen.

The teen's death prompted warnings from police to remain vigilant , wear appropriate clothing and carefully assess a river before deciding to cross.

"If in doubt, stay out of the river," Taranaki Search and Rescue acting Sergeant Peter Lawn said.
