New Zealand police dogs are getting some new accessories - stab proof harnesses.

The first 10 harnesses, which include polymer panels to shield vital organs from stabbing and slashing, have been put into action this week.

Dogs across the country will have a similar level of protection to officers when they're wearing their stab resistant body armour.

"We've been really aware over the years that our dogs had only speed and mobility for protection, but with this new harness we've given them another level of protection alongside that," Wellington's dog section head, Senior Sergeant Mark Davidson said.

The final 120 harnesses will be rolled out to the rest of New Zealand's frontline police dogs over the next three months.

The harnesses have been designed and produced in New Zealand.
