Kurt Baker has claimed a hat-trick in the wet as New Zealand beat Wales 19-7 to make it through to the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Sevens.

Baker got his first try in an opening spell that the All Blacks Sevens dominated.

New Zealand had come close to opening their account when Gillies Kaka was forced out in the corner.

In the ensuing lineout, they pinched the Welsh throw before Baker broke a tackle in midfield to score under the posts.

Wales mounted a fightback and they were helped by a yellow card to Sione Molia for an early tackle.

They weren't able to make the extra man count, but did go on to score early in the second half through Ben Roach.

Jordan Williams' sideline conversion in difficult kicking conditions tied the scores at 7-7.

But Baker put New Zealand back in front when he finished off a long-range attack and he got his third with time almost up after he snapped up a loose ball.

New Zealand went to Hong Kong, the seventh of world series' 10 rounds, a close third behind leaders Fiji and second-placed South Africa on the points table.

In the semi-finals, they will meet South Africa, who beat the United States 28-0 in their quarter-final.
