Next UK high commissioner not decided: PM

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/07/2016

Prime Minister John Key has refused to be drawn on whether Sir Jerry Matapaere will be named the next New Zealand high commissioner in London.

When asked about the appointment by reporters in London on Monday, Mr Key said the new high commissioner hadn't been decided yet and he hadn't seen the final recommendation for the post.

"There's lots of people who would like the post here, we'll have to wait and see."

Mr Key said Sir Jerry had done a "fantastic job" as governor-general and had been "a real credit and asset to New Zealand in a vast array of things he's done.

"But I wouldn't want to speculate who'll be next (as high commissioner)."
