A disappointing showjumping phase has left Kiwi Andrew Nicholson with a 19th-placed finish at the Luhmuhlen Horse Trials in Germany.

In the first four-star event since Nicholson claimed victory at the Badminton Horse Trials last month, Nicholson never found his groove on 11-year-old Teseo.

They were 19th heading into the showjumping on Sunday and stayed there after dislodging three rails, ending already-slim hopes of repeating his victory at Luhmuhlen four years ago.

Julia Krajewski of Germany won on Samourai du Thot, knocking over one rail to inch ahead of Briton Nicola Wilson and German overnight leader Bettina Hoy.

Fellow Kiwis Caroline Powell (on Sinatra Frank Baby) and Tim Rusbridge (Oneforthenotebook) were both outside the top-20 after the cross country phase and withdrew before the pre-showjumping horse inspection.
