Nicholson lifts at Luhmuhlen Horse Trials

Andrew Nicholson has edged up the leaderboard at the four-star Luhmuhlen Horse Trials in Germany but is still well off the pace in 19th place.

Nicholson and 11-year-old Teseo, making his four-star debut at Luhmuhlen, eased around the cross-country in a tick under 11 minutes, well inside the 11min 11sec cut-off for penalties.

The pair have improved 10 places on their 29th position after day one and remain on their dressage tally of 52.1 penalties.

Bettina Hoy of Germany still leads the standings with 36.00, fractionally ahead of compatriot Julia Krajewski (37.1).

Nicholson is looking to back up from winning his first Badminton title in 36 attempts five weeks ago, capping a remarkable return from neck surgery 18 months earlier.

He has previously won in Luhmuhlen, four years ago on Mr Cruise Control.

Fellow Kiwi Caroline Powell has two mounts at Luhmuhlen - Sinatra Frank Baby sits 23rd on 53.7 points but Spice Sensation, who was 38th after dressage with 56.60, was retired after the cross-country

Tim Rusbridge on Oneforthenotebook picked up cross-country penalties after finishing 11sec outside time but still improved 12 places to sit 33rd going into the final showjumping phase.
