Veteran Kiwi eventer Andrew Nicholson is in a share of fifth place after a strong start to the Badminton Horse Trials.

Nicholson and his long-serving mount Nereo picked up 38.0 in the dressage phase to sit 6.1 points behind Australian leader Christopher Burton on Graf Liberty.

Despite a decorated career, Nicholson is yet to win the famous English four-star event.

Four-time winner Sir Mark Todd is the next best Kiwi, with his two horses placed just inside the top 15. Leonidas II picked up 42.9 penalty points and NZB Campino 43.6.

Other Kiwis have drifted off the pace heading into the cross-country phase.

Tim Price (Xavier Faer) was 34th, Blyth Tait (Bear Necessity V) 37th, Jesse Campbell (Kaapachino) 40th and Dan Jocelyn (Dassett Cool Touch) 73rd in an 82-strong field.
