New Zealand equestrian Andrew Nicholson is in third place after the second day of dressage at the Burleigh Horse Trials in England.

The five-times Burleigh winner achieved a life-time best score riding Nereo to finish up behind Australia's Chris Burton and Germany's Bettina Hoy overnight.

Nicholson's scored 35.2, including a flurry of nines towards the end of his ride, although it wasn't enough to keep up with Burton and Nobilis' dominant 30.2 performance.

"I'm very pleased. That was as good as it could have been," Nicholson said.

"I've deliberately not brought him up here [to the arena area] since the trot-up because I trust him to behave and concentrate 100 per cent."

Heading into the cross-country and showjumping of the four-day event, Kiwi Caroline Powell is in fourth on Onwards and Upwards.

Olympian Tim Price has manage to retain seventh place with Ringwood Sky Boy, while Blythe Tait is in ninth on Bear Necessity and Sir Mark Todd 10th.

Rain is forecast for Saturday's cross-country stage.
