Nine arrested in fatal kidnapping case

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/05/2016

Nine people, including Head Hunter gang members, have been arrested and charged in early morning raids in relation to the fatal kidnapping of Auckland woman Jindarat Prutsiriporn.

An investigation into the death of Ms Prutsiriporn began after she escaped while bound and gagged from the boot of a moving car in the south Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe in March.

She later died at Middlemore Hospital after suffering a serious head injury.

On Wednesday, around 100 police staff, including the Armed Offenders Squad, carried out raids at 13 Auckland properties.

The search warrants were executed peacefully.

Five men aged between 25 and 33 were charged with her manslaughter and kidnapping.

Another three men and a woman between the ages of 23 and 29 have been charged with kidnapping.

Some of the people arrested are members of the Head Hunters gang East Auckland chapter, including patched members.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch says his team has been working tirelessly for the last 10 weeks to get to the position of undertaking the raids.

"This was a complex investigation with a number of people allegedly involved," Det Insp Lynch said.

"I hope the arrests can provide some comfort to Jindarat's family and the wider community."

Police cannot rule out the possibility of further arrests as the enquiry unfolds.

It is believed that Ms Prutsiriporn's kidnapping was drug-related, police said.
