Parliament's Maori affairs select committee is still discussing whether there should be a day and when, but Labour's Nanaia Mahuta indicated it would go ahead regardless after a hui settled on that date.

Prime Minister John Key said it was an important part of reflecting on New Zealand's history.

But he has ruled out chances of a day off in commemoration.

"I think the government's general feeling is we have enough public holidays. It's always possible to swap one but that brings around its own challenges so there's no plan to do that at this point," he said on Tuesday.
