No Jedinak for Socceroos

NZN 6/09/2016 Ben McKay

Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak has lost his battle with injury to play in Australia's World Cup qualifier with United Arab Emirates.

The midfield warrior hadn't trained since arriving in Abu Dhabi four days ago and was given every chance by coach Ange Postecoglou to prove his fitness but fell short.

His omission is one of three changes from the Socceroos side that beat Iraq 2-0 in Perth last Thursday.

Matt Spiranovic will line up in defence in his first match for the national team since last October, allowing Mark Milligan to take Jedinak's defensive midfield role.

Ryan McGowan replaces Milos Degenek at right-back and Robbie Kruse starts ahead of Massimo Luongo.

Tim Cahill will once again start on the bench with Tomi Juric preferred as central striker.

A win for Australia will see it leapfrog leaders Saudi Arabia to top the group.

With the help of two late penalties, Saudi Arabia defeated Iraq 2-1 earlier on Tuesday to maintain a 100 per cent record in the crucial stage of World Cup qualifying.
