There's no indication New Zealanders have been caught up a deadly subway bombing in the Russian city of St Petersburg, Prime Minister Bill English says.

The attack killed 11 and injured 45 on Monday (local time) while Russian President Vladimir Putin was visiting the city, his home town.

Mr English said he wasn't aware that any New Zealanders had been involved.

"The foreign minister will be conveying the support of the New Zealand government to Russia," he said.

He urged Kiwis travelling to take extra care following the attack.

"Foreign Affairs keeps a pretty close eye on what the travel risks are, there's already indication of risk going to parts of the Russian and neighbouring region, so Kiwis should always just be a bit careful about where they're going," he said.
