A 7.2-magnitude earthquake near Fiji is no threat to New Zealand, Civil Defence officials say.

The quake struck 284 kilometres off the Fiji coast on Wednesday at 10.53am (NZT), the US Geological Survey says.

However, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, in a tweet, says it poses no tsunami threat to New Zealand.
