No one caught in big Pukekohe blaze

Firefighters have confirmed no one was trapped in a massive blaze which tore through an arcade in central Pukekohe.

There were fears people may still have been in flats above the arcade when it caught fire on Friday morning.

Nineteen fire engines were battling the blaze in the two-storey, heritage-listed 1923 Beatty and Marshalls Building, which housed the Seahorse Restaurant and La Red Berry Cafe.

Adjoining shops also caught fire before the flames were brought under control, the Fire Service says.

There were reports people were possibly trapped inside, the communications team said in a tweet early in the event.

However, the spokeswoman later confirmed no one was caught up in the blaze.

It was possible no one was actually in the building - people calling in may have believed there was living accommodation on the second floor - but firefighters needed to go through the building to confirm that.
