No sign of alleged Coromandel shooter

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/05/2016

A man who fired a gun at a house bus in the Coromandel and prompted an armed police call-out has still not been found.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called out and the area around the home on State Highway 25 was cordoned off for a search following reports of multiple gun shots during a domestic incident about 2pm on Monday.

A police helicopter was circling near the home with nearby residents being told to stay indoors.

At 6pm police said they had been unable to find the man and had lifted the cordon.

Officers are still trying to locate him, but say it does not appear he poses a threat to the public.

The highway, also known as Kopu-Hikuai Road, was closed between State Highway 26 and Kitahi Road and diversions were in place, although all roads have reopened since.

Police earlier said two schools had been told to go into lockdown over the incident, but now say they did not as there was no immediate danger.
