A 54-year-old man has been arrested in Northland as part of a murder investigation after the death of John Henry Harris last October.

The man, who had been at large, was arrested in Tinopai and will appear in the Whangarei District Court on Thursday.

Detective Inspector Dene Begbie says police appreciate the help the public provided.

Mr Harris, 37, died at the St John Ambulance station in Whangarei after being dropped there with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The arrested man was located on Wednesday morning in an operation in which police carried out simultaneous search warrants in Tinopai and in Dargaville.

Det Insp Begbie says methamphetamine chemicals and equipment were located in Tinopai and a meth lab in operation was found in Dargaville.

He says two arrests were made in those matters.
