Northland's new state highway official

Northland is getting a new state highway to better link forestry areas with the region's port.

From Monday, 96km of roads from just north of Kaikohe to Marsden Point will become SH15.

That means the NZ Transport Agency will take over the operation and maintenance of the roads.

"These roads are an important link between Northland's 50,000 hectares of forestry and its ability to move timber products off-shore at the port," Transport Minister Simon Bridges said.

"Changing the roads to a state highway will ensure there are three strong routes connecting Northland, making the network more resilient to unplanned incidents and weather events and balancing the needs of local communities, tourists, and light and heavy vehicles."

In recent years a number of crashes involving logging trucks have prompted calls for roads in Northland to be upgraded to state highway status.
