Kiwi doubles specialist Michael Venus has secured a notable scalp to reach the quarter-finals at the ATP clay court tournament in Portugal.

Venus and American Ryan Harrison upset top seeds Sam Groth (Australia) and Robert Lindstedt (Sweden) 6-3 5-7 10-4 in a tense struggle.

Victory had personal value for Venus, who has played seven tournaments previously with Lindstedt and is now seeking a regular partner on the elite circuit. The Kiwi has a world ranking of 41st while Harrison is ranked 245th.

Another Kiwi, Marcus Daniell, is seeded third at the tournament with Brazilian Marcelo Demonliner. They are yet to play.

At the Istanbul Open, New Zealand's Artem Sitak and American Nicholas Monroe are the top seeds.
