NRL referee Jared Maxwell's bunker banishment has extended at least another week after being dumped to under-20s for last week's video referee blunder.

Maxwell was last Friday blamed by referees boss Tony Archer for the incorrect decision to award Manly winger Akuila Uate a try that denied Newcastle a chance to win.

Maxwell was stood down for the rest of round 14 after breaking protocol by telling referee Ashley Klein to award the try despite being told to review the decision by his touch judge.

Maxwell was further punished on Tuesday by being left out of bunker duties in round 15, and will instead be the match day coach for a Holden Cup game in Melbourne.

An NRL spokesperson left the door open for his return next week.

"Jared won't be in the bunker in Round 15," the spokesperson said.

"But he will still fulfil his role as development coach with our emerging referees squad as well as match day coach for the NRL and Holden Cup matches in Melbourne.

"We'll make any decisions on who will officiate in Round 16 at the completion of Round 15."
