New Zealand will contest the knockout phase at the women's youth water polo world championships in Auckland despite a second loss.

The tournament hosts went down 16-6 to Russia in their final pool game to follow an opening win over South Africa and loss to Spain.

With the top teams advancing straight to the quarter-finals, teams ranked second and third from pool play meet on Thursday for an elimination round.

New Zealand, whose opponents are Italy, will take some confidence from an improved performance against the Russians. They led 4-3 early on and were boosted by strong performance from goalkeeper Antonia Young.

The top qualifiers are Russia, Hungary, Greece and the Netherlands.
