New Zealand is giving Pacific Island countries $3.6 million to help them combat money laundering and comply with international standards.

Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee says compliance with international standards is costly and complex for most of them.

The money is going to the Asia-Pacific Group on Money Laundering.

"The group will use the funding to provide Pacific members with technical assistance, including drafting new legislation, training regulators and supervisors of financial and non-financial institutions," he said.
