New Zealand and South Australian principals have swapped schools for the first time under a new exchange programme.

Steve Berezowski, principal of Gisborne's Te Wharau School, on Monday became acting principal of Adelaide's Richmond Primary School, swapping places with Tracey Davies.

They'll stay in their roles for the duration of term three, which started on Monday.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the principal exchange is the first of its kind.

"It presents a hugely exciting opportunity for both principals to gain practical experience from a different education system and country," she said.

The exchange programme was developed by the Ministry of Education and South Australia's Department for Education and Child Development.

Each year principals from schools with similar sized rolls will swap positions for a term.
