Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy and Argentina's Secretary of Agriculture, Ricardoi Negri, signed the agreement on Wednesday during Mr Negri's visit to New Zealand.

Mr Guy says the two countries already have a close relationship in agricultural science and the agreement allows greater cooperation.

"We are natural partners in developing practical, sustainable solutions for reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions," he said.

"Our research institutions are already exploring opportunities for joint research."
