NZ-based cyclist critically hurt in Italy

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 5/06/2016

Christchurch-based teenage cyclist Keagan Girdlestone is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash during a road race in Italy.

Girdlestone, who races for his native South Africa, was involved in two crashes during the Coppa della Pace under-23 race near Rimini.

The race was called off when officials realised the serious nature of the second crash involving 19-year-old Girdlestone about 100km in.

The second incident reportedly involved a collision with a support vehicle from his Dimension Data continental team.

His father Wayne Girdlestone, a cycling coach in Christchurch, provided an update on social media on Monday (NZT). He said his son was out of theatre but still in critical condition.

The Girdlestone family shifted from Pretoria to Christchurch in 2013.

Girdlestone won two New Zealand age group titles and dominated some local races before a stint racing in Australia.

He placed fourth in the junior men's time trial at last year's world championships before being offered the professional contract this year.
