Substitute Tayla Christensen scored in the 89th minute to hand New Zealand a 1-0 win over Ghana in their opening match of the under-20 women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

Ghana had the better of an entertaining affair but couldn't crack a Junior Football Ferns defence and their excellent goalkeeper Nadia Olla.

The decisive goal came when Christensen was put clear, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home on an angle with her left foot.

New Zealand's second game on Thursday is against the United States, who drew 0-0 with France.

The Junior Football Ferns won two pool games at the 2014 tournament in Canada before losing to Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
