New Zealand will stage a bid to host the 2020 Futsal World Cup after submitting official documents to FIFA this month.

The country, which has already hosted the 1999 U17 and 2015 U20 World Cups, will become the first country in Oceania to host the event if elected.

There are more than 20,000 registered Kiwi futsal players, according to NZ Football, and seven Kiwi cities have volunteered to host matches.

Both the NZ government and Oceania Football Confederation have supported the bid.

"It would go a long way to achieving our goal of making futsal the nation's best and biggest small-sided sport," said NZ Football's Dave Payne.

New Zealand will face stiff competition to host the event, with rival bids coming from Costa Rica, Croatia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and UAE.

Colombia will host the upcoming Futsal World Cup in September.
