Oliver Whyte's late goal has booked New Zealand a place at the under-17 World Cup following a tense Oceania semi-final in Tahiti.

Whyte scored in stoppage time to hand the Young All Whites a 2-1 win over Papua New Guinea.

Reaching the Oceania final is enough to qualify for the 24-Nation World Cup in India in October.

New Zealand will be joined there by New Caledonia, who beat the Solomon Islands 3-2 in the other semi-final. The Oceania final will be played on Saturday (NZT).

After marching through pool play unbeaten, the Kiwis had to fight to overcome a determined Papua New Guinea, who scored near halftime through Barthy Kerobin to cancel an early own goal scored by their defender Aben Pukue.

Whyte's late heroics, moments after coming on as a substitute, ensured the match wasn't decided by a penalty shootout.
