Shannon McIlroy and the New Zealand men's four have claimed gold medals at an eight-nation bowls tournament on the Gold Coast, the venue for next year's Commonwealth Games.

The Kiwi bowlers claimed six medals in total across eight disciplines, a figure eclipsed by the 14 medals won by Australia's two teams.

McIlroy was victorious in the men's singles, pipping Scot Alex Marshall 21-18 in a tight final.

It was more comfortable in the men's four decider, where Tony Grantham, Mike Kernaghan, Paul Girdler and Ali Forsyth headed off an Australian Gold combination 17-9.

Silver medals went to the Kiwi men's pair and women's triple along with accomplished women's singles player Jo Edwards, who went down 21-12 to long-time Australian rival Karen Murphy.

A lone bronze was won by the men's triple.

New Zealand also sampled invaluable time on the greens at the Broadbeach Bowls Club last week, when they lost the annual trans-Tasman series to Australia.
