NZ boxer David Nyika wins at Rio qualifier

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 19/06/2016

New Zealand heavyweight David Nyika has won his opening fight at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Azerbaijan with a first-round knockout.

Nyika was too good for Kevin Prudence Kuadjovi of Togo, ending the contest with 15 seconds remaining in the first of three scheduled rounds.

Commonwealth Games champion Nyika needs to win his division to qualify for the Rio Olympics, which means prevailing in five successive fights.

His next opponent on Monday is third-seeded Dutch fighter Roy Korving, a southpaw who received a bye through the first round.

Three other Kiwis were eliminated from the tournament in Baku with first-round losses.

Nyika's brother Josh exited from the welterweight division after being knocked out, while lightweight Chad Milnes and light-heavyweight Tyson Sykes suffered unanimous points losses.

A fifth New Zealander is yet to fight. Light-welterweight Richard Hadlow has drawn Australian David Biddle on Sunday.
