The New Zealand Breakers have moved to to fill a temporary void left by injured guard Shea Ili, signing Australian Isaih Tueta on a short-term deal.

Tueta, who hasn't played at NBL level, will join the team in time for their pre-season series of games against the Brisbane Bullets this week, in Tauranga, Napier and Invercargill.

The 24-year-old has been playing for the the Brisbane Spartans in Australia's premier domestic winter league, the SEABL. He was recommended to the Breakers by the club's former guard CJ Bruton.

Ili's return date is uncertain. He will miss the first part of the NBL season with a stress fracture to his back.

Breakers coach Paul Henare is pleased at the speed with which they found a replacement and the quality of the player.

"Izzy is a player that we were made aware of during the off-season but we just did not have room in our guard line," he said.

"I watched three of his games from the SEABL and was happy with what I saw."

Tueta will have a bench role behind American import Ben Woodside and prolific Tall Black Corey Webster.
