Forty-four-year-old African elephant Mila, formerly known as Jumbo, was rehomed in the US after fatally crushing handler Helen Schofield at Franklin Zoo in 2012.

Mila spent nearly three decades touring New Zealand with the Whirling Circus Brothers, before retiring to the south Auckland zoo.

The cause of her death is not yet known and autopsy will be performed, San Diego's 10 News reports.

Franklin Zoo was closed to the public after Dr Schofield's death, and had to shut down for good later in 2012 due to a funding shortage.
