New Zealand have effortlessly retained their group one Davis Cup status after clinching victory over Pakistan in Christchurch.

Olympic doubles pairing Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus overwhelmed Aqeel Khan and Mohammad Abid Ali Khan in straight sets to give the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead on Saturday.

Like the two singles rubbers, Pakistan struggled to even win a game. The doubles match took just over an hour, ending 6-0 6-1 6-2.

New Zealand dropped a total of just 10 games across nine sets of lop-sided tennis, with Rubin Statham and Finn Tearney romping to straight set wins on Friday.

The result means New Zealand remain in Asia-Oceania group one next year while Pakistan are relegated to group two.
