NZ cyclist Dion Smith fifth in French tour

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/05/2016

In-form New Zealand road professional Dion Smith has completed successive top-10 finishes for his European-based One Pro Cycling team.

Smith was fifth on general classification in the Four Days of Dunkirk tour, finishing 42 seconds behind French winner Bryan Coquard.

A fifth placing in the decisive fourth stage - 176km from Audruicq to Cassel - lifted him to fourth overall before he lost one spot on Sunday's final 160km stage.

The result in the five-stage event comes a week after 23-year-old Smith claimed 10th place on another UCI Europe Tour event, the Tour of Yorkshire.

Smith has impressed since joining his British-based team in September.

He won New Zealand's REV Classic race in Cambridge in February, before recording top-30 finishes at two prominent European races in March.

His UCI world ranking, based on general classification results, was 136th before this week - the best of any New Zealander.
