Just one New Zealander remains in men's doubles contention at the French Open after Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak lost their first-round matches in Paris.

Sitak and American Nicholas Monroe started well before going down 5-7 6-4 6-4 to 12th seeds Marcin Matkowski (Poland) and Eduard Roger Vasselin (France).

In a late result, Daniell and Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner went down 6-4 6-4 to the seventh seeds, Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Marcel Granollers (Spain).

Kiwi Michael Venus negotiated the first round of the clay court grand slam tournament on Wednesday.

He and American partner Ryan Harrison will next face fourth seeds Lukas Kubot (Poland) and Marcelo Melo (Brazil) in a match that won't be played until at least Friday.
