NZ film scores noms at UK Empire Awards

The ceremony, which celebrates the most impressive films and cast members across genres, will take place at London's Roundhouse on Sunday (Monday 0630 NZT).

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople will up against box office heavyweights Arrival and La La Land for the best film award.

Taika Waititi's heartwarming Kiwi tale of a boy in the bush has also been nominated for best animated film, best screenplay, best comedy, best male newcomer (Julian Dennison) and best director (Waititi).

The Kiwi film covers the comical relationship between foster child Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) and his reluctant foster father Uncle Hec (Sam Neil) as they attempt to evade the law by retreating to the bush.

British film veteran Ken Loach is on the list for best director for his hard-hitting social commentary in I, Daniel Blake.
