NZ heavyweight Nyika remaining an amateur

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/07/2016

New Zealand boxer David Nyika will stay in the amateur ranks until at least the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

One of the country's most promising fighters, Nyika has endured an injury-plagued period and was disappointed to fail to qualify for the Olympics as a heavyweight.

He has been touted a bright professional prospect but the 20-year-old told Fairfax Media he wants prove himself in the amateur ranks and better himself as a boxer, rather than fight novices in the pro ranks.

Nyika chose to go up a division after winning light-heavyweight gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

His progress has been stalled by breaking bones in both hands and he suffered losses to quality opponents at two Olympic-qualifying tournaments.

He says his pride is dented and wants to take out his frustration at the national championships in Rotorua next week.
