New Zealand is hosting a top level regional defence meeting in Auckland.

The South Pacific Defence Ministers Meeting on Thursday will discuss security, future military exercises, disaster relief and women in the armed forces.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says the meeting brings together the highest levels of defence leadership from around the region, with Fiji the newest member.

The first such meeting was held in Tonga in 2013 and the second in Papua New Guinea in 2015.

Members include Australia, Chile and France.

The UK and the USA attend as observers.
