New Zealand's Olympic silver medallist men's sprint team have secured a straightforward gold medal on the opening day of the Oceania track cycling championships in Melbourne.

Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins clocked a solid winning time of 43:535 seconds, heading off an Australian trio by nearly 1.5sec.

Australia had the better of trans-Tasman duels in other elite events, including the women's team sprint, where Emma Cumming and Natasha Hansen were well beaten into silver.

The men's and women's team pursuit finals were also well won by Australia over Kiwi riders coming out of a rest and training block.

Tour of Southland road winner Aaron Gate had to settle for second in the points race behind Australian Sam Welsford.

Kiwi Racquel Sheath was third in the women's points race.

The four-day championships provide a first chance to collect UCI qualifying points for next year's world championships.
