Hawke's Bay professional George Brannigan was the best of the New Zealand riders in placing 13th at the mountain bike downhill world championships in Italy.

Brannigan negotiated a dusty, bone-jarring course in Val di Sole to finish in 3min 46.132sec, more than 13sec behind British winner Danny Hart.

Wyn Masters was 25th and Brook MacDonald 29th while four other Kiwis finished outside the top-30 on the course which was pockmarked by tree roots.

"It's probably the worst it's ever been since I've raced here," MacDonald tweeted.

The women's race was also won by a Briton, with Rachel Atherton claiming a fourth title.

Lone Kiwi Alanna Columb was 17th, just over a minute off the pace.
