HMNZS Hawea is due to leave the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland bound for Fiji to help patrol the country's exclusive economic zone for six months.

It's the first time a New Zealand navy inshore patrol vessel has been deployed to the South Pacific.

The move was announced by Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee earlier this month and the Hawea leaves on Monday.

"As part of our renewed engagement with Fiji, we will be conducting maritime surveillance and supporting the Fijian Navy's capability development," Major General Tim Gall, the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand, said.

Fiji's territorial seas and EEZ encompass more than 1.1m sq km.

Personnel from New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries, Fiji's Department of Fisheries and the Fijian Navy will join the patrols.
