A Royal New Zealand Navy sailor is missing in Samoa after failing to return from a popular tourist spot.

Joseph Tua, 24, flew to Samoa last week for a short holiday to visit his uncles, Samoa Planet reports.

He visited To-Sua Trench, a tourist swimming spot on Upolu Island, on Saturday and hasn't been seen or heard from since.

Mr Tua's sister told Samoa Planet when trench security staff went to close at 6pm they noticed his car was still there and called police.

His parents and sisters have flown to Samoa to help with the search, and the New Zealand High Commission in Apia is helping police with the search, which officially began on Sunday.

Mr Tua is a junior sailor at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland.
