NZ pair exit doubles curling world champs

A loss to Switzerland has ended New Zealand's hopes of reaching the knockout phase of the mixed doubles curling world champions and dented their Olympic hopes.

Naseby siblings Scott and Bridget Becker lost 7-4 to unbeaten Swiss pair Jenny Perrett and Martin Rios in their final group match in Lethbridge.

It was the fourth loss in six matches for the Kiwis, who needed a top-three finish to advance to the final 16.

Those slots are taken by Switzerland, Russia and Spain.

The Beckers must content themselves with classification matches at a tournament which is a qualifying event for next year's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

They lodged resounding wins over Romania (13-4) and Slovakia (8-3) but losses to the Swiss, Spain (8-6), Russia (8-4) and Slovenia (10-4) counted against them.
