NZ para-canoeist misses Rio qualification

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/05/2016

Christchurch paddler Scott Martlew has fallen short in his bid to qualify for the Rio Paralympics after failing to reach the final at the para-canoeing world championships in Germany.

Martlew needed a top-four finish in the KL3 division in Duisburg but he placed fourth in his semi-final which wasn't enough for the 23-year-old to advance to the final.

Duisburg is also hosting the first World Cup regatta of the year which will feature New Zealand's six Olympic-bound paddlers.

Olympic and world champion Lisa Carrington will open her international season in K1 competition on Friday, along with Marty McDowell in the men's K1.

The women's K4 crew of Aimee Fisher, Kayla Imrie, Caitlin Ryan and Jaimee Lovett will contest their heat on Saturday.
