New Zealand have pipped England 36-35 to complete a thrilling round of matches to start the Fast5 netball world series in Melbourne.

All three first-up matches in the short format tournament were tight contests, with Australia pipping Malawi 24-23 followed by Jamaica's 35-32 defeat of South Africa.

New Zealand and England were locked together 7-7 and 12-12 through each of the first two quarters before the Kiwi side played their power play to good effect in the third stanza.

With shooters Maria Tutaia and Te Paea Selby-Rickit landing some long shots which counted for double points, New Zealand raced 32-19 clear.

The English employed their power play in the final quarter and levelled the scores before New Zealand finished stronger in the dying minutes.

New Zealand's other games on Saturday are against South Africa and Australia.
