NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/07/2016

A former New Zealand police officer is in a coma in Australia after being injured in a horse fall while working with the mounted police.

Andrea Bennett was riding with the unit in Alice Springs, Northern Territory when her horse fell and rolled on her.

She suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Senior Constable Bennett's husband Nigel is also a police officer, and the couple have two sons.

"Andrea is an amazing caring and thoughtful work colleague who always brings a smile to the station," Jason Smith said in a fundraising campaign set up to help pay the injured officer's recovery.

"She is a much loved member of the Alice Springs Police and the wider NT Police force."
