The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) is due to wind up on Saturday, but deployed New Zealand police will remain there.

More than $12 million will be given from New Zealand's aid programme over the next four years to provide support to the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, Police Minister Paula Bennett says.

"We have signed an arrangement with the Solomon Islands Government today that will allow this support to continue once RAMSI formally concludes."

Eight New Zealand Police advisers will stay and help to implement crime prevention strategies, focusing on community policing, and try to ensure that stability is maintained.

Currently there are 16 New Zealand Police personnel serving, half of whom will return on Friday.

Around 2000 New Zealand Defence Force and police personnel have served in the Solomon Islands since 2003.
