NZ snatches Rio weightlifting spots

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/05/2016

New Zealand's weightlifters have done enough to secure selection for one man and one woman at the Rio Olympics.

The Kiwi men's lifters needed to place in the top four on team points at the Oceania championships in Suva to lock in one Olympic spot. The Kiwi women needed to finish in the top three.

Both placed second - behind men's winners Samoa and women's winners Australia - leaving the national selectors to consider its options for nomination to the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

A men's nomination is likely to be double Olympian Richie Patterson, who won his 85kg class.

The other senior gold medal went to Pip Patterson in the 53kg competition but she is not guaranteed a nomination in the more competitive women's division.

Other candidates include 75kg+ silver medallist Tracey Lambrechs, who won bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
