NZ stunned by Malaysia in third Test

The Black Sticks have let their guard down against Malaysia to lose the third women's hockey Test 1-0 in Stratford.

Following 3-0 and 2-0 wins to open the five-match series, the world No.5 New Zealand team failed to trouble the scorers despite controlling early proceedings.

They struggled to forge clean shots on goal and became frustrated as the 21st-ranked visitors held firm.

Malaysia secured the winning goal when Fatin Sukri converted from a penalty corner three minutes from the end.

Black Sticks assistant coach Sean Dancer didn't mince his words when assessing the performance of a team featuring several international rookies as they build player depth.

"The result is disappointing and our basics were poor tonight," he said.

"We started well and created some good opportunities but unfortunately our final touches and shots at goal weren't good enough.

"To Malaysia's credit they were able to take their chance to win the game but we certainly need to be better for our next game."

The remaining Tests are contested over the weekend.
